Searching the FIND directory

You don’t know the name of the organisation you’re searching for
Search using a single word or choose from the drop-down list of categories. You can also select the location from the options given to reduce the number of matches you get back.

You’re not sure of the exact word to search for (eg is it dancing or dance?)
Use a * to replace the bit of the word you’re not sure about, eg danc* would find dancing, dance and dances.

You want to narrow your search
Check the boxes in the ‘Support Types’ list that apply to your search.

You only have a rough idea of what you're looking for (like a careers centre)
Search using a combination of words and you’ll get back a list of organisations containing one or more of your words in any order.

You know exactly what you’re looking for
Put quotes around your search "like this". You will get only exact matches.

Advanced searching

You want to search for a type of organisation but want to exclude certain sorts of matches (eg drugs but not smoking)
Use the – symbol. Eg drugs –smoking would bring back matches that had the word, drugs, in the name or description but not the word smoking. Alternatively, you could use NOT, eg drugs NOT smoking. (Note: NOT must be used in caps).

You know what you are looking for contains a particular word
Use the + symbol. eg +sexual health will find matches that all contain the word sexual but those that contain health too will appear higher up the list. Alternatively, you could use AND, eg sexual AND health. (Note: AND must be used in caps).
